Visit of the mausoleum Mohamed 5 and Hassan Tower
About this experience
he Mohammed V Mausoleum, located on the esplanade of the Hassan Tower in Rabat, is an iconic monument of modern Alaouite architecture. Built between 1962 and 1971, it houses the tombs of King Mohammed V as well as those of his two sons, Hassan II and Moulay Abdallah. Its white marble exterior, green pyramidal roof, and finely carved facades make it a must-visit site. Inside, visitors can admire traditional zellige tiles, carved cedar wood, a decorated dome, and the large funerary hall at the center of which lies the tomb of Mohammed V. The mausoleum is permanently guarded by the Royal Guard in traditional attire, adding to the solemn atmosphere. Entrance is free, and the site is generally open throughout the day, except during certain official ceremonies. Directly opposite the mausoleum stands the Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of a monumental mosque started in 1195 by the Almohad Sultan Yacoub Al-Mansour. The project aimed to build one of the largest mosques in the world, but construction stopped upon the death of the sultan. Today, the tower reaches 44 meters in height, while the original plan called for over 70 meters. The esplanade is scattered with columns and pillar bases, remnants of the mosque’s original design. The site provides insight into the architectural ambition of the Almohad era and offers an open space ideal for panoramic photos of Rabat and the Bouregreg River. Opening hours: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM (5:45 PM on weekends) Entrance : Free
